Cumin seed is a dried seed, derived from a flowering plant, Cumin, belongs to the family Apiaceae. It is native from the east Mediterranean to South Asia. The Major producers of Cumin Seed are Pakistan, India, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Syria.
Description:
Cumin is the seed that comes as paired or separate carpels, have a striped pattern of nine ridge and oil canals. They are hairy, brownish in color, oblong shaped, narrowing at each extremity, with tiny stems attached. They resemble caraway seeds but are lighter in color. They have a spicy sweet aroma with sharp bitter and pungent taste.
Storage:
Cumin seeds can be stored in an airtight container away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Then, they will remain their flavor for about one year.
Uses:
Cumin is used wildly in Indian, Eastern, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish cooking. Cumin seed is used as a spice for its distinctive flavor and aroma. Cumin can be used ground or as whole seeds. They are used as an ingredient to add earthy flavor in Stews, Soups, Casseroles, Curries, Bread, Pickles, and Pastries.
